Brahmi or Bacopa monniera is a medicinal herb commonly seen in marshy areas in Asian countries such as India, Nepal, Sri Lanka, China, Taiwan etc. Brahmi is known as an effective nerve tonic. Ayurvedic practitioners say that the herb provides a soothing effect to the mind and at the same time brightens up the brain cells by improving the blood circulation to the brain. This in turn helps improve one’s intelligence. The quality of the herb as a brain tonic is so renowned that in Kerala, parents give the paste of Brahmi leaves to children daily. The plant is also used in Ayurvedic treatment for anxiety, nervousness etc. The Ayurvedic drugs made from Brahmi are believed to have the quality to improve memory and it is used in Alzheimer’s Ayurvedic treatment and parkinson's ayurvedic treatment The plant is also believed to enhance the longevity of a person. Charaka, one of the ancient Ayurvedic scholars had identified the anti-ageing qualities of the plant and mentioned it in his treatise, Charaka Samhita. According to Ayurvedic practitioners, the plant also has detoxifying qualities, hence it is used in skin Ayurvedic treatments as well. The plant is also employed in treating the pain and inflammation of the joints, asthma, epilepsy and some fevers.
