An apple a day keeps the doctor away, thus goes the proverb. But practically, as we are not in a position to keep the doctor away, we need to recognize his/her contributions to our health and society. A day in the calendar has been set apart for that purpose; in India Doctor's Day is observed on July 1 as it is the birthday of Dr B C Roy, the famous physician who was awarded the greatest civilian honour Bharat Ratna. Now, coming back to the need for observing the day, the first thing you should do is remembering all the physicians who helped you maintain a healthy body and mind. They may include the doctor who touched you first before handing over to your Mom during your first moments on earth, the doctor who examined the wound on your knee when you were just five, the doctor who counselled you and asked you to go for a rejuvenation therapy in one of the ayurvedic resorts kerala or the one who treated you for a serious illness. Till recently not much of a revelry has been associated with the Doctor's Day. It is observed rather in a solemn manner by conducting seminars and meetings. So next time, gear up for the day and thank your doctor for all the help. This gesture, in a way, will be acknowledging his/her contributions and efforts.
