Hi, Ive only just joined one of the few suffering females of the hobby. I build quite a few figures im in2 anime at the moment. Just finished building belldandy from ahh my goddess. Quick question how do you create the look like the figure is wearing tights such as flesh coloured and dark ones as im not sure how to get the see-through texture. Any help or suggestions would be grately appriciated ;D

Welcome aboard Camogirl.
As for tights/stockings I spray the flesh colour on first to match the rest of the figure then lightly overspray with the desired colour for the material. Remember to keep the layers light where the material will be stretched thin but heavier in places where the fabric isnt so taut like behind the knee around the ankles etc.
Practice on scrap material first!

Welcome too the site Camogirl, i'll have a look for my book "Painting Girls" it has a few pictures of JJ Models figure with stockings and a step by step guide on how to do it. I assume you have a double action airbrush which will make the process much easier for you too achieve.
Oh and you are in good company as there are several other young women on this site, Mena and Pepa have created some marvelous figures here and you can see them in the adult section. If you would like access too that area send me an email or a PM

I agree with Kornbeef - use an airbrush, but get hold of some decent masking tape to mask off the very top of the stocking first. Spray on the first layers up to that. Then to get the thicker looking material at the top of the stocking, mask off a band underneath the top masking, the scale of the figure will dictate the depth of this, but on a 1/3rd scale model, it should be around 15mm. Spray again over this band so that the paint lays on a denser colour. Last time I did this I used Tamiya colour Matt White and thinned the paint down with about an equal amount of thinner. Hope that this helps. Adrian.

BUT if you're using a brush and oils... basically, paint on the color you want the stockings to be then take most of it off.
First, finish the skin right down to the shading the way you would normally.
Now do the stockings (tights) like so...
Tape and mask the legs to paint only the stocking tops, heels, toes and seams. Brush down the color you want or maybe a shade darker. Let it dye the 'skin' for about 5 minutes. Them brush it OFF with a clean brush. Leave something like a layer of color behind to simulate a thicker layer of nylon. Let it dry and remove the masking. Seal it with a spray of... Dull Cote. You WANT extra color there that won't be removed later.
Now, brush the legs with the same color including a second coat on the tops and seams. Brush IT all off. The tops will now be darker than the legs, like a double layer of materials. The legs will show the nylon color but the skin tones and shading below will come right through (especially across the thighs and knees where they'd be stretched and more transparent). The more color you brush off, the more leg color shows through - except in the deeper contours where the stockings aren't quite as stretched and transparent - like sheer nylons right?
So the folds probably have had all the color brushed off and you need to fix that. Wait and hour or so but while the paint is still a bit wet add some nylon color to the high folds. That should represent darker, unstretched nylon.
The sheen of the oil paint will be good enough but if you want to make it a nice satin finish pick the BEST matte sealer for STOCKINGS, mask the rest of the figure so you have slightly different finishes between the skin and the stockings and spray away.

Hi CG,
Welcome to the board! I am pretty new to the group too, and to doing figure models. As was mentioned, Pepa is also a female modeler, and she is helping me with doing shear clothing on my current figure. Check out her work on the female with protector; the conversation there will give you an example of the things folks are talking about here. I think it is vry similar to doing hose and tights. Anytime we can help, just give us a shout!
Cheers, Jim
