I've just purchased a couple of action figures ;Dthat I want to upgrade and place in dioramas. I believe they are vinyl , I'm not really sure. They are from Clayburn Moore, 2 Julie Strain Heavy Metal and a Vampirella. Could anyone tell me the proper filler putty or such to use on vinyl? what primer may be good for use under airbrushed com-art acrylics? Any help is greatly appreciated ;D

well i used regular car automotive primer paint for everything and so far haven't run into any problems... however don't use humbrols maskol or if you do use it quickly, i made teh mistake of leaving on overnight and then removing it... it stripped the paint back to the vynal, paint and primer gone in one easy movement lol
good luck mate !

Thanks Phantom Major, I've been doing my homework off the link page as well, (Garage kits figure modeling) so this site is proving more helpful than I first imagined Can't wait to get cracking ;D

I found that Halfords do a Plastic bumper primer that I always use on Vinyl and never had any problems with. comes in dark, light grey and white I think.
As for filler I'm not sure but big fills I would be tempted to use Plastic Padding type Elastic, it's slightly flexible so may give more with the Vinyl
Hope this helps

well i've got to admit the primer for car bumpers/fenders sold by halfords is news to me but something i'll need to look into when i get back as it sounds very interesting.
as for putty, i think i would go with Milliputt as i feel there is less likelyhood that it would do any damage too the kit. you could also primer the area to be filled and then use the putty or filler of your choice and thus creating a sort of protective barrier...of course there is no guarentee that the primer and filler wouldn't react but i think there would be less chance of it..... to summerise.... i'd go with Milliputt
however i will bow to better knowledge as i'm pretty much a newbie when it comes to vynal kits... i'm just a resin head at heart ! :-)

Just picked up a standing Vampirella on ebay The seller seemed honest that it was a recast, he bought years ago when he was a newbie. He worked it up to a good looking piece, still needs work tho. Figure why not for my first attempt at resin. On the vinyl front, I will be heading out to find milliput ;D Thanks again gang

"i wish you luck with it and let us know how you get on !" Thanks ;D and will do! Glad I found this site before buying, I had my eye on two kits from Thailand (dirt cheap) I probly would have bought them if I hadn't read up on the whole recasting and what it has done to the hobby I've seen such great works over the years, and now, when I finally get the courage to try resin, to see that their creators have been put out of bussiness because of this, really ticks me off. If the kit was new from a recaster, I wouldn't have bought it. Seeing as it is going to a guy who got scammed, and it's my first attempt, I'm happy the way its worked out. ;D

Ok, Received my vinyl kits (action figures ;D) today, and I am thoroughly disappointed, not for the reasons you might think! They are Superb! Mr. Moore is an unbelievable artist, whose work even put into vinyl, astounds me. The faces are perfect, no weird eyes or disproportionate lips! All three are based on Julie Strain and they are Julie in Vampy and F.A.K.K form. I just can't see messing up such beautiful pieces, maybe with more practice and time I might try to change (wouldn't dare say improve) them. I have decided that one of the F.A.K.Ks will be sacrificed seeing as those two are the same, only difference being colour. Even the bases are great to where weathering isn't needed. So for now, will start fiddlin with the one and wait for my first resin Vampy kit to arrive.

doon,
it's good too see i'm not the only one that gets the same hang-ups about altering a kit when they actually get it, that's the big thing for me, the fear i'll mess up a really good kit and be left with nothing... that's why i started buying two copies of the same kit when i go too alter things that way i can restore the one i messed up.
still, i'm glad to see you are still going ahead with your project, i wish you all the luck i have and look forward too seeing what you produce !
