Here's my first attempt at figure modeling, using Clay Moore vinyl action figures. In the first photo, mine is the one on the right in black. The one that I worked on was sculpted beautifully, but was put together rather poorly. Legs were positoned far back on the torso, causing an 1/16" mud flap on buttucks & gap on front hip bones. Shoulders and elbows had large gaps & hinge points exposed. I had to resculpt the buttucks & hips, fill & shape....along with reforming and shaping the arms. Comments & criticisms welcome. ~Joe

Hey, nice work! Ive got some of the Chaos unpainted figures Ive been slowly working on. Filling joints and stuff. What did you use to prime them with. One I tried to prime, its now all sticky.

Hey Figurator, From what I've recently learned, the reason your figure is sticky is that you can't use petroleum based paints on vinyl. Believe it or not, all I used was Com-arts opaque white acrylic, then mixed my flesh with the com-arts and built it up. Used the citadel matte varnish (thanks for explaining ;D Then just went back and forth playing with the colours. Funny, I used enamels and acrylics from all different companies and didn't have a problem. I wanted her more tan, so as to look like she been out in the waste lands for a while.

hmmmm, who carries the ComArts? havent seen it. I do some vinyl kits from time to time and always have the same problem of not having a suitable primer. I just let it be sticky until I get the first few coats of acrylic on .

Figurator, I got mine through Dixie art, down your way. I just went to the site and can't find the com-art there anymore I'll keep lookin through my stuff to see where else their available. What type of acrylics are you using? I wonder if the fact that the com-art are designed for the airbrush may have something to do with them not reacting with the vinyl, maybe something different in the mix? Well if I find out where they are available, will let ya know ;D

oh, Im using Freak Flex, or Tamiya acrylics. But its the primer thats causing the problem. I cant find a suitable primer for vinyl. Everything seems to be enamel, or oil based.

Doon, I like your version of this figure. The color of the skin is very natural although I believe that he would be advisable to apply some shade more. But if you like such and as she is, it´s better don´t touch it more.
Figurator, as primer for vinyl you can use any acrylic painting with water base. This type of paintings does not contain dissolvents in their composition that can damage the vinyl and return it sticky. It is not necessary to use a special primer for vinyl, this type of painting (acrylics waterbased) can serve to you perfectly like primer. Later, you will be able to paint on this undercoat of acrylic with any other type of paintings without no problem (even with enamels or oils). This undercoat will not become sticky.
Pepa.

Thanks Pepa ;D Also thanks for the info on the acrylics, I was going to use that (acrylic) as a primer for any resin kits, but now I realize I have to get a good auto primer

That's a great job. I think Julie Strain is entirely too hot for anything less than "slinky with weapons."
