I recently managed to buy Solarwinds Countess Karnstein on ebay and have begun the process of cleaning her up. To be honest, i didn't realise how big this kit was, the coffin she lies on must be twelve inches long !

JIm, check out the current issue of Amazing Figure Modeler for the latest Karnstein figure kit. I believe it is the 6th in the line of releases. She's perched on a heavy duty looking throne. Very cool article. Good luck on your kit. "Q"

I think that Karnstein is one of the great subjects currently being cast. This particular on is a favorite of mine. In fact with all the emphasis on her recently I decided life was to short not to have her. First thing in the morning I order #6 and # 7. While I like all of the models I just can't get into the ones under 1/6 scale.
Can't wait to see you finished version.

Well folks, it's been a while since i did any work on this little lady and since i had a good supply of different flesh tones left after doing work on my other karstein i decided too make use of them, so i pulled this countess out of the box again and resumed work on her. I am also in the middle of experimenting with Revell's clear matt varnish as i want too seal in the tamiya flesh tones before moving on too the other sections of both these kits. Not sure when i will be able to carry on with both these kits or even when i will be able to complete them as i'm searching for the perfec matt varnish.... if the spray mix of the revell stuff i am using doesn't work i'll try brushing it on but i'd sooner spray it. Anyway here is a flesh tone update of the Countess on the Coffin:

Looking great ! certainly on the flesh tones. can I ask what Tamiya colors you use? Ive been using Freak Flex, but they have too many chunks in them even after filtering. I really like Tamiyas cause theyre so clean.

i've been using regular flesh paint for this but toned down with white as i find the flesh tone to be rather orangy, however my regular flesh tone mix using Tamiya paints is: dark yellow, white with a tiny amount of red to warm it up.
for the highlights i just added more white... alot more actually. In the future i plant o experiment with liqtex artist acrylics but i need to get paid again for that too happen as well as finding a good stockist !
Hope this helps

PM, I used Citadel matt varnish, not the aerosol but the little pots thinned with Tamiya thinners for my Karnie and got excellent results!

PM, nice work so far. I use Liquitex acrylics for most of my kit work, especially the flesh tones. I use the raw sienna, burnt sienna, titanium white formula. I sometimes add some freak flex colors to the mix to change it a little (Nosferatu Flesh, etc). The only problem with this is the paint can't be kept for very long. For some reason it wreaks to high heaven, almost smelling spoilled. No ill effects on the paint job, though.
I have this kit also, but haven't gotten to it yet. I'm currently working on the 1/6 scale reclining Vampirella, by John Wright. I couldn't just paint it as it came. I had to cut her off of the base. I built a coffin for her to lay on, so she will kind of match this kit (when they're done). I've working on this thing, off and on, for over a year. I'll post some pics of my progress so far.
Keep after it!!

gordman1,
i am familiar with this paint and types you speak of... i have been watching the Model mania video's that David Fisher made and i plan to start experimenting wih this type of paint some time soon. in the meantime i still use Tamiya paints which are really aimed at the military market.
As for John Wright's reclining Vampirella... i have one of those as well ! and i have found sanding under one of her legs to be almost impossible... as for cutting loose from the base, i wish i had thought of that...i would then scratchbuild a new coffin or some other type of eternal resting place!
i can't wait too see your pictures as i have had mine for over a year but have never done any painting with her yet.... i just don't think my skills are good enough too do that master peice justice!
